Schorl, also known as black tourmaline, is a variety of tourmaline that is formed in a pegmatite environment, typically through hydrothermal activity. This mineral owes its characteristic black color to the presence of iron impurities within its crystal structure. Schorl is commonly found in various regions around the world, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and the United States. Its robust and prismatic crystal formations, combined with its striking black color, make schorl a sought-after mineral and a prized addition to mineral collections. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, schorl is highly regarded for its alleged metaphysical properties, believed to offer protection against negative energies and promote grounding and balance. Its unique combination of beauty, rarity, and perceived metaphysical attributes contributes to its allure and makes it a highly collectible mineral.
