Fuchsite is an emerald green variety of muscovite, which is the most common form of mica. This variety of mica forms in thin sheet like flaky layers. Muscovite also has a pearly luster, which translates over to fuchsite and combines with the brilliant greens due to the addition of chromium. Varying levels of chromium determine its color intensity. Fuchsite is also the most common inclusion in quartz to create green aventurine. This lustrous stone was named after Johann Fuchs, a German chemist and mineralogist who was known for his waterglass work and contributions to the production of cement. Today’s fuchsite can be found in Brazil, Austria, Sweden, and the US.

Though the pearly greens may make it seem easy to spot in a crowd, fuchsite has been a confusing stone throughout its life. Aside from the spelling issues of fuchsite and fuschite, the addition of ruby in fuchsite leads to misidentification between it and zoisite. Visually speaking, the easiest way to discern the two is by looking at the interactions of ruby with the stone. In fuchsite, there will be blue kyanite alterations while zoisite has black hornblende scattered throughout the green of the stone.
