Prehnite was first discovered in 1774 at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa by Abraham Gottlieb Werner, who named it in honor of Dutch Colonel Hendrik von Prehn. It most often forms as stalactitic or botryoidal aggregates. Vary rarely does prehnite form individual crystals. Typically it is associated with minerals like datolite, apophyllite, stilbite, and heulandite in veins of basaltic rocks, granites, or gneisses.

One of the most notable localities for prehnite is the Kayes Region of Mali, but it is also found in Tanzania, Namibia, Europe, and the United States.
