Moss Agate is not technically a true agate because it does not have the banded patterns typical of Agates. It is actually Chalcedony Quartz with inclusions of iron and manganese that form in structures and patterns similar to moss. While these formations very closely resemble moss or lichen, there is no organic matter within the stone. Moss Agate is also known by the name Tree Agate.
