Pyritized Ammonite Fossil TD1774

Pyritized Ammonite Fossil
Approx. Dimensions: 1.75×1.5×0.5 inches
Approx. Weight: 21.6 grams
Locality: Saratov Oblast Region, Russia (from the Middle Jurassic Period)
This Quenstedticeras Lamberti ammonite fossil is from the Middle Jurassic Period, about 161-164 million years ago. The internal structure of the ammonite has been completely replaced by pyrite. As ammonites grew, they formed chambers within their shells. Those chambers have been lined with crystalized pyrite on this fossil. This piece has been partially polished to showcase the beautiful pyritization of the internal structure. One side of the shell has been left natural, and some pieces show beautiful iridescence typically found on fossilized ammonites.

Acrylic stand and putty are not included, but can be found in our Stands, Mounts, and Accessories page.
