This exceptional reverse intaglio carving features Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. The master artisan incorporated a single blade of golden rutile that is present in the quartz to become Sun Wukong’s magic staff.

Sun Wukong is a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices. He rebelled against heaven and was imprisoned under a mountain by the Buddha. Sun Wukong is extremely fast and strong, and acquired 72 Earthly Transformations which allow him to access 72 unique powers including being able to transform into animals and objects.

The golden-banded magic staff, depicted in this intricate carving, is acquired by Sun Wukong after testing many weapons that displease him. He is the only creature strong enough to wield the staff, which weighs 7960 kg. His staff can change size, so when he is not wielding it, the Monkey King shrinks it down to the size of a sewing needle and stores it in his ear.

In a reverse intaglio carving, the artist carves into the back of the piece rather than the front. This technique allows for more of a 3-dimensional experience when viewed from the front.
