Stichtite is a rare carbonate mineral known for its distinctive pink to purple coloration, often occurring in association with serpentine minerals. It is primarily found in regions such as South Africa, Australia, and Canada. Named after Robert Carl Sticht, a South African mining engineer, stichtite has a relatively short history, with its identification dating back to the 19th century. Chemically, stichtite is a hydrated magnesium chromium carbonate, forming in hydrothermal veins and metamorphic environments. It typically exhibits a hardness of 1.5 to 2 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft. Stichtite’s vivid colors and association with serpentine make it a valued collector’s item and occasionally used in jewelry as an ornamental stone.
